Torre de Belem (Tower of Belem) – A symbol of Portuguese grandeur, surrounded by the ocean on three sides. Built under Manuel I as a harbor fortress, this well-known tower is still a symbol of Portuguese grandeur despite its receding beach. Lagos - On the south coast of the Algarve, is one of the country’s most popular resorts. Most visitors are drawn to the superb beaches. Parque Nacional da Peneda-Geres – Wilderness park in the far north of Portugal, near the Spanish border, has spectacular scenery. The park features hiking, swimming, horseback riding, and canoeing. Douro Valley – This valley is one of Portugal’s scenic highlights. Port-wine vineyards sprawl across the hillsides and boat cruises along the Rio Douro make for a perfect way to soak up the atmosphere. Sagres – Tiny fishing port perched on the cliffs of southwestern Portugal. The village, a center for boat-building and lobster-fishing, is in close proximity to Lagos. Nearby are several pleasant beaches.
