Australia OverviewSpend some time in the Land Down Under and experience the amazing diversity for which this vast country is known. Australia’s first settlers reached this South Pacific landmass over 40,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on earth. Australia’s endless sun-baked horizons, rugged desert outback, dense tropical rain forests, and beautiful beaches make it a nature-lovers paradise. Its Cosmopolitan cities combine a classic European enthusiasm for food and art with a well-known affinity for sport and the outdoors. Its people are as diverse as it’s ecosystems but are generally regarded as friendly, welcoming, enthusiastic, and adventurous. When you think Australia, think BIG. There are lots of places to see and lots of things to do but it’s important to realize that time is of the essence when planning. (Australia is the 6th largest country in the world, just behind the U.S. and Brazil.) With that in mind, there is something for everyone. The thrill seeking, adrenaline junkie will find skydiving, bungee jumping, Aussie rules football, top-notch scuba diving, and world-class surfing. The nature enthusiast will enjoy the extraordinary variety of endemic plant and animal species including the popular kangaroo, koala, dingo, wombat, and the myriad of marine life found in the Great Barrier Reef just off Australia’s northeast coast. Australia’s large urban centers including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth will provide the metropolitan traveler with an enchanting nightlife and outstanding cultural happenings in an accessible, up-beat environment. The Great Barrier Reef - The world’s biggest single structure made by living organisms, located just off the Northeast coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef covers over 130,000 square miles of sea and is home to thousands of species of fish and other marine life. Visible from outer space, this extraordinary underwater paradise has been deemed one of the great natural wonders of the world. Ayers Rock (Uluru) - Venture into the Aussie Outback and explore the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park where you’ll find the world’s largest monolith (rock). A sacred site for the aboriginal Anangu people, Ayers Rock (also called Uluru) changes color from shades of fiery red, delicate mauve, blue, pink and brown, and rainfall creates a silver veil over the entire rock. The rock covers 5.6 miles in circumference, which is especially astounding, as an estimated two thirds of the rock exists below the ground. The Gold Coast - Renowned for its perpetually sunny subtropical climate, the Gold Coast stretches across 40 miles of pristine beach with a beautiful mountain rainforest backdrop on Australia’s east coast. Australia’s most popular tourist destination, the coast offers a relaxed atmosphere with excellent water activities, fabulous restaurants, and an exuberant nightlife. The Twelve Apostles - located along Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, these naturally formed rock pillars just off Australia’s southern coast were separated from the cliffs by 20 million years of harsh winds and giant waves. Be sure to check these natural wonders out at sunrise or sunset! Sydney Opera House - One of Australia's most recognizable works of architecture, designed by Jorn Otzen in 1959. Tours are readily available, but seeing a performance at the theater is even better. New Zealand - Australia’s neighbor to the southeast, New Zealand is known for its dramatic and varied landscape making it a popular location for the production of television programs and films. Rafting, airborne sightseeing tours, wine tasting, wildlife watching, biking, and skiing are just a taste of the activities enjoyed on this majestic group of islands.
