Information about Amman, Jordan (Click to view)
Originally built on seven hills, Jordan’s capital and biggest city now spans over nineteen hills in north-western Jordan. A cosmopolitan city of two million, Amman offers everything from shopping malls to ancient Roman ruins, and some of the grandest mosques in the Middle East. The cooling effects of its location on a plateau allows Amman to enjoy four seasons of excellent weather. Frequent bus connections to other cities in Jordan as well as to major cities in neighboring countries make Jordan a great jumping-off point to visit other countries in the region.
The bustling urban area includes the Old City, centered around the Souk (colorful traditional market) and the King Hussein Mosque. There you can explore the capital's greatest souqs, fine museums, ancient constructions, monuments, and cultural sites.
Considered part of the cradle of civilization, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is today a stable, constitutional democracy at peace with its neighbors. Sharing borders with Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Israel/West Bank, it is mostly arid desert plateau in the east, with the Highland area to the west. The Great Rift Valley of the Jordan River separates Jordan and Israel. Jordan shares borders of the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba with its neighbors. Its population of 6 million is a mostly Bedoin and those of Palestinian origins, with a small number of ethnic minorities (Circassians, Chechens, Armenians, Kurds, Turks and others of East European descent).
Considered the safest country in the Middle East, Jordan offers historical treasures, great natural beauty, and great opportunities for the adventurous, including hiking, scrambling, rock-climbing, camel-trekking, 4WD excursions and more.
