Amerispan's specialized two-week Social Work Seminar aims to provide Social Work Professionals with hands on experience and a greater working knowledge of the Latin American social situation. During the two weeks students will participate in Spanish classes focussed on teaching relevant professional vocabulary and dealing with specific cultural issues. In addition to the language classes students will participate in three professional conferences and will take part in four specialized field visits. Social Work Professionals will return to their home country with invaluable skills and experiences that will profoundly effect their ability to successfully communicate with their Latin American clients.

Participants: Social work professionals and prospective social work professionals with at least a high beginner level of Spanish.

Other: Very nice, modern building with large windows and view of a volcano. Located in San Joaquin de Flores, a few minutes outside of Costa Rica's capital. Classes take placemainly in class rooms, but also in the gardens. 17 class rooms. There is a cafeteria, administrative office, student room with 2 computers for email access, ping pong table. Capacity is 70 students/day.

Program Notes

  • Examples of topics discussed include issues of domestic violence, abandonment, teenage pregnancy, and drug abuse in Latin America. The program will also explore specific Costa Rican methodology and techniques dealing with the above issues.
  • Deadline to register is Monday, May 19, 2008. Please note there is a $150 cancellation fee in addition to the $100 non-refundable registration fee for the seminar. Cancellations less than 4 weeks in advance are also subject to a $330 penalty in addition to the $150, which covers the cost of excursions.
